Our Review of the Suunto t1

Introducing the newest additions to the Suunto t1 line - the t1c

New for 2008, the Suunto t1c - the "c" stands for comfort - includes Suunto's all-new Comfort Belt.  Compared to the traditional Suunto heart rate belts, the new Comfort Belt sports fabrics that feel soft against the skin while traction strips keep the belt snug.  The removable transmitter module lets you to throw your Comfort Belt right in the washing machine.  The Comfort Belt may also be purchased separately for those wanting a spare or to upgrade from their older t1 heart rate monitor belt.
Additionally, the new t1c models come in some slick new colors and include a style specifically for women, featuring unique band detailing and a slimmer band profile for a more feminine look.

Also New to the t1 line - new colors in the non-c t1

The most affordable Suunto t-Series model, the t1 (no "c") still comes in at just $99.99.  The t1 offers the same functionality as the t1c, but is packaged with the more traditional Suunto heart rate belt.  Like the t1c, these new t1s are available in attractive new colors.

Suunto t1 Environment: Walking, Spinning, Step, cycling, and more

Running with the success of their t6 personal training wristop computer Suunto offers three additional models (the t1, t3, and t4) available for a range of prices and features. Every one of the t-series Suunto personal training watches monitors your heart rate, real-time calories burned, and helps you establish and maintain a personalized fitness profile. The purpose of the t-series is to assist in the development of an optimal training range for fitness enthusiasts, a task that was at one time reserved for professional athletes or others with access to personal trainers and elaborate monitoring equipment.

Training watches in the Suunto t-Series combine streamlined equipment with a user friendly interface that tracks your fitness regimen and suggests adjustments either during or following a workout. All you'll need to start your optimized fitness regimen is your t-Series Suunto training watch and the Suunto heart rate belt. The t1 heart rate belt does NOT feature ANT technology.

The t1 is the 'bare-essentials' model in the Suunto t-Series. It monitors your real-time calories burned, provides 3 adjustable heart rate zones plus a heart rate limit alarm if you are over-exerting, and includes a stopwatch. There's also the standard watch functions (time, date, weekday) as well as a dual time display, backlight, and a single daily alarm.

The t1 is the most affordable model in the Suunto t-Series, and its reduced price reflects the absence of certain outstanding features that you'll find in Suunto's other personal training watches. The new additions to the t-Series also have interchangeable wristbands in various styles, a smaller face than most other Suunto's, and a sleeker overall design.

For women, Suunto offers uniquely styled wristbands with elegant patterns. Slimmer straps improve fit and comfort without compromising performance.

Key Features of the Suunto t1 personal training watch:

  • Monitors real-time and average heart rate
  • Monitors real-time and average calories burned
  • 3 adjustable heart rate zones
  • Heart rate limit alarm (prevents over-exertion)
  • Stopwatch
  • Standard watch functions (time, date, weekday, dual time display, backlight, alarm)

What is the difference between the t1 and other t-Series watches?

The t1 series does NOT have:

  • Interval, warm up, and countdown timers
  • Real-time "Training Effect" monitoring of your improving fitness
  • Optional fitness training and monitoring software
  • 15-25 log memory (t1 has 1 log)
  • 50-100 lap monitoring (t1 has a 30 lap memory)
  • Suunto Peripheral Observation Device (or "POD") compatibility. These PODs monitor speed, distance, and other data while biking or running.

Works Great!

I love this watch! It has dramatically improved my running by keeping me in my target range. Easy to use out of the box for all basic functions - hr, cal, stopwatch. Still waiting to try it in the gym, having too much fun with it on the trails! And, it is stylish too.

Complicated to use

Works well, but is difficult to figure out. Screen is hard to see sometimes (contrast). The manual is poorly written / translated (English).

This would fit my wife perfectly. If she was a man.

I was really excited to purchase this well reviewed watch for my wife who is a runner. However, I think you should change the description of the watch to make it more clear that this is a UNISEX watch. It would have fit well on my wrist, but it looked ridiculous on my petite wife even in the pretty curry color. Its a shame there doesn't seem to be a Suunto specifically designed for women. Or is there?

Comments from The Staff:

If I'm reading your review correctly, it's simply the size that's behind the one-star rating? Suunto DOES make a women's-only watch, the Suunto Lumi, but the Lumi is an Outdoor ABC wristop, not a training watch. Either way, I'm sorry to hear you're not satisfied with the t1. Frankly, it takes a little bit of real estate in which to pack all of the technology that go into Suuntos, and the t-Series watches are actually some of the most compact models Suunto makes! My wife is very petite and loves her t3, so I suppose the size simply comes down to a matter of personal preference. Regardless, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!

Suunto t1 Nice Basic HR Monitor

4
Reviewer: bolocheung , Palm Harbor, FL Date: October 11, 2007
I was looking for a simple HR monitor for keeping my HR in target zones during my running workouts. So far the Suunto t1 has met my expectations & gives me the necessary feedback on HR, calories, & workout time. At the gym on a treadmill it does transmit to the other treadmills next to me, so I think it may annoy others who are not wearing a HR monitor since their treadmill HR is reading my HR. I have not used it next to anyone else with a HR monitor so don't know how much interference would be a problem. I think the newer t1 will alleviate this potential problem. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a bare bones, easy to use HR monitor without the bells & whistles. I am happy so far & use it during every run.

Comments from the Staff

Thank you for the feedback. The t1 is the base model in the Suunto Training series, and as such does not offer the full range of features available with other Suunto HR watches. For example, the HR belt for the t1 is not interference free, and may interrupt or be interrupted by nearby electronic equipment. So, it's not the best fitness watch for gym training. The other watches in the Suunto Training Series come with interference free HR belts and may be a better choice for indoor fitness training.

This is a great product. A truly water proof watch for $100. I have received nice comments about its appearance. I don't care for the look of the whole Polar line of HM watches

Good but hard to read

I like the watch but the black model is hard to read. One of the other models may be better.

Great HRM!! Thank you Suunto.

Reviewer: Daniel Sonkin, Ph.D. , Sausalito, CA. Date: July 10, 2007
I own a Suunto Observer, and so when looking for a HRM I immediately looked to Suunto because of their high quality watches. I was conflicted between this model and the T3 and opted for the simpler model and I am glad I did. After talking to friends and trainers, I discovered that the average person tends to not use all the bells and whistles in the long run. It works great and I am very pleased with this product. I also bought one for my wife too. She has the coral and I have expresso. I like the black letters on light background because it's easier to see (with my aging eyes first thing in the morning) than the white on black. The plastic face should not be a problem if you use it primarily during workouts. My only concern is that the chest-strap supplied with the watch is really made for people with a smaller frame because it's a little on the tight side. If it doesn't loosen up over time, I may opt for a larger strap. Thank you Suunto for another fabulous product. BTW, customer service at suuntowatches.com is great!
