Our Review of the Suunto X6 HR

Just when you thought a sports watch couldn't get any better, Suunto introduces the X6 HR, X6 HRM and X6-HRT. These are truly the next generation in sports watches, packed with all of the technology that Suunto enthusiasts have been craving. Designed for Cross Sports applications, the X6 writstops are functionally very similar to the Suunto X6 - but with the added benefits of a heart rate monitor.

The X6 HR, X6-HRM and the X6-HRT each sport an Altimeter, Barometer, Thermometer, Compass, Watch, and Heart Rate Monitor. Utilizing a cell-phone like interface, Suunto has simplified the process of navigating though the multitude of functions, with intuitive graphical displays and scrolling menu systems. Your data is PC Downloadable so you can record, track, and analyze all of your vital information ( via serial port, USB adapter available - no support for Macintosh).

Once your data is downloaded to your PC, it can be analyzed with the included software, and uploaded to SuuntoSports.com, where you can refine, share, and compare your data with fellow Suunto enthusiasts. A truly unique experience only available for the newest Suunto watches.

What really sets the X6 HR-series watches apart from other heart rate monitor watches is the monitor belt. In the past, Suunto has utilized Polar® technology for their heart rate monitors. However, Suunto wanted to improve accuracy and functionality, so they brought it in-house. The result is wireless communication with a graphic profile of heart rate, display of average/highest/lowest rate, and memory capacity for different intervals, interval reminder - plus, the battery is user-replaceable.

I love my X6HRM

5
Reviewer: Paul , Warren, MI Date: April 09, 2008
I'm suprised reading the all of the problems people have had. This watch has been awesome. I was travelling with a dress watch for work and a HRM for the gym, but this does it all. It is nice enough for work and durable enough for all my other activities. The band has been great. I just ordered my first replacement and the watch is 2 or 3 years old (it has been so trouble free I forgot when I bought it.) I only take it off for sleeping and airport security. After lots of abuse and even a few mountain bike crashes, I don't even have scratches in the crystal. The bezel, however, is starting to show some "character marks." Everything seems to work right. It even held HR data in the memory while I changed the battery.

Happy (Lucky?) Customer

I have used the X6HR for about 2 years now. I use it as a general timepiece, as well as the other functions. I like the fact that it is small enough to use as a everyday watch, people have no idea you are wearing a mini computer like they do with a protrek or a vector. It's design is nice, very attractive. Its user menu is so similar to Nokia phones that it is easy to understand and operate, the buttons are easy to use and I'm really impressed by how easy it is to use. I purchased as I wanted both a HR monitor and an altimeter/baro for outdoor pursuits, am pretty happy with it. Unlike a lot of others, I've had no real issues with customer service, the wristband (I have broken it once, but then I break all my wristbands, on all my watches, after a period of time - come on people, it is rubber!). The screen does scratch easily but that doesnt worry me too much. Batteries seem to last 3 to 6 months with my use, but then you can buy them anywhere and change them yourself so not an issue. Water resitance - I have used this watch extensivly while whitewater kayaking, and never take it off when swimming or showering, and have never had an issue. I think a lot of people have problems because they use the buttons when its under water, which you are told not to. This watch takes a beating - I am a fireman, and as a result, it gets into some pretty hot/wet/humid/tough conditons, and has always fared well. The battery cover is a bit annoying to get off, although I have heard the replacement battery kit from suunto fixes that problem. I have just recently started using this for paragliding and find it is accurate enough for my needs. A lot of the reviews on here and other sites seem to be written by people who do not understand the limitations of this watch. If you understand its limitations/abilities, you will have no issues. People dont realise that air pressure changes during the day, so altimeter may need recaliberating as you travel - a limitation of ANY alti-watch. The compass issue (see review below) of it only showing S/SW - I had this when i changed my battery. To fix it, I recaliberted the compass (read your manual), and it fixed it. The compass is very handy and I use it reguarly when out in the field, especially the bearing lock feature to follow a bearing. The baro is use a bit, handy when stuck in a hut waiting for the weather window to open. The Temp gauge is handy as well, just for interests sake. The clinomter i have used once on a scree, although im sure others could use it more reguarly. The stopwatch/HR is probably my most used feature, along with the alti. I love recording my mountain runs/flights/climbs. The HR monitor is accurate and very comfortable, I do like that feature. The software, however (SAM) is terrible. I have taken to using Polar software with a file converter to allow me to convert my suunto files into polar format. Come on suunto, get with the play, give us some better software!!! All in all, I'm very happy with this watch. It's comfortable, looks good, accurate (if you know how to use it), water resistant, and very, very useful. I never take mine off.

Great watch --flakey

Reviewer: Anonymous , Chicago, IL Date: November 23, 2007
I have had the X6-HR for some time now. Since 2002 I have returned the watch ELEVEN times for service. I have been thru both models. I have had 2 models of the first watch and three models of the second -- I.e. 5 different serial numbers! Various things go wrong with the watch. Mostly the face turns black. Sometimes the altimeter stops working as well. I swim a lot -- 10 hours a week, and use the watch to keep a record of my heart rate. I AM VERY CAREFULL not to push buttons while I am in the water. I have detailed the history of my problems at epinions under Suunto x6hr if you are interested in a blow by blow description. I most recently returned the watch because the face went black and the altimeter stopped working. They claimed they were rebuliding my watch. After 8 weeks they sent an X6 not an X6-HR back to me. So much for "rebuliding." I finally got a brand new X6HR back from them. Everytime I have sent the watch in, it has taken at least 5 weeks to get it back. Let's see... 11 times service, times 5 weeks each time > 1 year I have been without this watch. I love the watch, just wish I could use it more often. I have found that the latest X6HR model with the crystal flush with the top of the watch NEEDS A WATCH GUARD or else the crystal gets all scratched up. I have been using one for the last 10 months. (It did not protect the watch from other systemic problems which required my recent return.) Update 11/21/07: On 10/15/07 The altimeter registered -9,000 ft, after a recent airplane trip. Nothing else untoward happened to the watch within recent memory before that. The rest of the watch seemed to work properly. I returned it to Suunto for service. They have a new procedure which makes it far simpler to get service. You just fill out a request form and it generates a FedEX shipping label which has them cover the cost of the shipping. It is tracked and insured. I did not hear from them for nearly 4 weeks. When I called they told me that the watch was still under warranty and could not be fixed. They said they were sending me a replacement. They shipped me an X3HR worth about $200 less than the X6HR. I then had to return that. I just received my X6HR. So I was without the watch again for another 30 days. We will see how long this one lasts. Maybe using the watch so much in a wet environment is the cause of all my problems. Any ideas?

Wow Neil, thanks for your thorough review. This is a rather unusual case, I'm not sure I have any simple answers. But I am sorry to hear that your experience with Suunto on repair and warranty was subpar. They are currently making strides to implement vast improvements on this front. As to your question, wet environments shouldn't pose a problem for the watch unless buttons are pushed while submerged. I certainly hope your latest X6HR proves to be of the quality Suunto is known for.

Good While it lasted

I have owned this watch for about 2 years now. It has been on numerous deployments and beaten in the florida swamps. Everything worked great up untill recently when I had to order my 3rd wrist band and now the compass wont calibrate reads S and SW only now. As for the wrist band it's been my experience that there needs to be something done about the quality in which their made. They tend to start fading and cracking to the point where they split like a folded piece of cheese. Literally thats why I'm rating this a 4 was going to make it a 3.

Excellent Quality Watch

I currenly own three of these (two X6HRs and one X6HRM)watches and a total of five Suunto watches. I guess you know I love Suunto watches. My first Suunto X6HR (first generation)had the "defrag" problem. Suunto repaired the watch for free many years ago and the watch has worked trouble free ever since. My newer X6HRs ran perfect from new. The X6HR is a great looking, trouble free watch that I wear almost everyday if I don't wear my Suunto Observer. All functions of the X6HR are extremely accurate. The watch band has never worn out and held up well. The mineral glass face is a real plus for durablitiy. I have only replaced battery and the battery cover. The metal or stainless steel X6HRM is heavier than the X6HR but looks dressier. This is a proven Suunto product that has given me years of enjoyment and trouble free use. I would definitely buy another X6HR if it would ever fail.

Suunto X6HR

Watch performs as advertised. Heart rate function is excellent, although in a fitness center, nearby bikes and elliptical trainers will be displaying your heart rate--the belt seems to override the hand electrodes common on many machines today. Menu system is well designed and very intuitive. You can leave home safely without the manual! Tilt function is unique and, on occasion, very useful. Compass, barometer, and altimeter modes function well. Downsides: The size of the watch makes it somewhat impractical for everyday wear, especially if you wear long sleeves. The new, more stylish elastomer band with the white stripes seems much more flimsy than the original elastomer. Additionally, if you use the chronometer routinely for simple timing tasks, you'll quickly fill the memory. You need to routinely clear the memory on this watch, or the chronometer might not be available on short notice.

X6HRM

I bought my X6HRM in 2004. The variuos features of this watch are so intuitive that I've rarely open the operating manual since I've purchased it. Additionally this watch has worked flawlessly. I use it for hiking and geological field work. If you're as rough on your watches as I am, I would suggest getting the face protector for this watch. Keep up the good work Suunto!

A few glitches, but overall great!

I've owned this watch about 3.5 years. There are a lot of functions to get used to, but it's possible. I've used the HR monitor a lot during mtn. bike races with out trouble. It performed excellent through a deployment to Iraq where I only had to change the battery once. However, recently the battery has been giving out much too soon. In Australia at 18,000' AGL the watch stopped working. I replaced the battery and every thing seemed fine. Two months later the watch would, "defrag memory," and eventually die whenever I pushed a button. This was after several 13,000' Free Falls. I just replaced the battery again and it seems to be working fine, but for how long? I know now to always have a spare battery on hand. I've also noticed that the HR icon flashes while on military aircraft and tries to record a HR. The original wrist band has held up through all the wickets I?ve put it through which is amazing to me. Some clear packing tape on the face has kept it clean and scratch-free. Overall I've had enough success with this watch to outweigh the few problems I've encountered.

Comments from The Staff:

Sorry you have had some issues with your X6 HR. I would definitely direct this to Suunto at 800-543-9124 so that they can resolve these problems. Thank you!

Fantastic

Upgrades to this watch from a Vector. Wish it had a barometric trend graph on the face like the Vector but otherwise have not had a problem. Function menus are easy to navigate and the large characters and face make it easy to see. The stainless steel case is hard but not too heavy. Battery changes are a snap with the upgrade two-hole design for the cover. The heart rate wireless transmitter and belt is awsome running, swimming, or at the gym on a machine that recieves then it will shot info straight to the machine. The stainless steel band is comfortable and very nice to look at making the watch great for rugged work and fancy dress. Although, it was alittle hard to find and a bit over priced. Awsome watch.
