Our Review of the Suunto S-Lander

At a great price of $199.99, the S-Lander combines the housing of the X-Lander and the face and guts of the Altimax. With a water-resistant fabric strap and yellow display, this wristop computer is perfect for snow sport use.

The premier feature of the S-Lander is the logbook. It keeps record of the total and cumulative vertical ascents and descents, as well as the number of runs. The history will show your season total. The one-button access to this logbook adds to the user friendliness of this watch. The logbook will also automatically store the barometric pressure and temperature for the last four days to help forecast weather changes.

The S-Lander will also have your standard watch features including a calander, alarm functions, dual time and an electroluminescent backlight.

Love It

Great watch.. mostly use it for the log book when skiing or mountain biking. Only annoying thing that's happened so far is that the logbook apparently maxes out at 30,000 vertical feet. the logbook switched to dashes once i hit 30,000 on ascent and/or descent

Comments with the Staff

Thanks for the review. Here is an excerpt from the S-Lander instruction manual:

'The maximum figure that can be shown on the display is 29,999.999 representing feet or meters depending on the unit of measurement set. This should be enough for most users: 29,999.999 meters is roughly threequarters
around the globe.'

Hope this helps; glad you’re liking the S-Lander and thanks again for your input!

Overall Watch Review

Reviewer: WD , Savannah, GA Date: August 22, 2007
I bought the watch before my second 14 month tour in Iraq. Because I am a pilot, I wanted something that had Barometer, ALT and compass. I have had the watch for three years now (15 months in Iraq and numerous field exercises) and the watch is still going strong. Poly watch band absolutely sucked (broke in 1 month)but am still using the same band with modifications. I will buy the new one to try out. The only other thing that is annoying is the inadvertant switching from time to other pages (ALT, BARO, COMPASS) just from being active/moving around. Button activation could be tighter to prevent that. All in all, I am very satisfied with the watch. Thanks

My Watch

I am happy with the watch except that it is so complicated to operate and it is very difficult to get the light on.

Comments from the Staff: Complicated? Yes, on that point we have to agree. The proper operation of an S-Lander, or any of Suunto's altimeter watches, takes some understanding, patience, and pratice. Difficult to get the light on? You press and hold the button for 2 seconds. Something may be malfunctioning.

This watch does more than all my other watches I've ever owned-put together! I spend a lot of time outdoors & I've used it for such diverse activities as scuba diving & climbing to the top of Mt. Whitney. One of the best features is being able to change the battery at home and not losing the "water resistant" integrity. The barometer probably saved my life (and others with me) by showing a rapid decrease in pressure - giving us warning to seek shelter from a lightning storm before we even saw the signs. I love this product. The altimeter is really handy hiking in the high country, helping pinpoint location on a map. I could do all this with a GPS, but why - when I have this watch?

Super Watch

Reviewer: Billy L. Chaney Jr , Honolulu, HI Date: July 28, 2006
I purchased the watch in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom 5. I purchased the watch based on the capabilities of the watch the compass, altimiter, and multiple times you can keep. The watch came in really handy when calling medivac and needing a direction for the aircraft to land and calling winds from a specific direction. It was also extremely useful when taking altitude readings and knowing a quick reference for altitude changes from location to location. All these assets were nice and convient for use. Also the ability to tell temperatures in the vehicles when temps were well above 120 degrees. These temps make a big difference when ensuring soldiers were getting water necessary to remain hydrated and able to conduct operations as necessary.

I've been using this product for about 2 months. I bought it primarily for skiing, but used it successfully in CO for hiking and mountain biking. I like its looks. The three primary functions are intuitive and easy to use. I also am pleased with the band - it's a rugged synthetic which will serve well in winter weather. It's a great product - I can't wait for ski season.

I am not too happy with the watch in general. Within 4 months of purchase the band ripped and I had to buy a new one. That should be covered in a warranty, when I paid the price I did for the watch. I also had to buy a new battery a week after I bought the watch. It keep dying on me.

GREAT Watch

Reviewer: Anonymous , Graton, CA Date: July 21, 2006
I have had the X-Lander for about five years and it has been bullet-proof. I haven't actully shot a gun at it, but it has stood up to everything I have put it through. It has been dropped onto a concrete floor, bumped into door frames, worn daily for almost the entire time I have owned it, and still keeps excellent time. It loses about 1 second per six weeks and all of the features work well. the water resistance is still good, even after changing the battery, only once in whole time. My only complaint is that the lettering on the turnable ring on the face have worn off. I have a G6M, but I have not been using it too much... So I cannot comment on it's performance, but I expect it to work as well as my X-Lander
